Good night: Oh those Avs have done it again!

    October 29th, 2009

    The Lead

Well, the Avs did it again tonight and all you doubters can just go ahead and groove on that.

We all heard the talk at the beginning of the year; about how they’d finish dead last in the West, how there wasn’t anyone on the team that was any good and how you couldn’t enter a season with a goaltending tandem of Craig Anderson and Petr Budaj and still expect to win any significant number of games.

And with tonight’s 3-2 win over Calgary on the second night of a road back-to-back, those doubters were once again proven to be 100 percent WRONG.

    Good night: Uhhh, Bruce?

    October 28th, 2009

    The Lead

So tonight the Flyers are beating the Caps by two late in the second period, right, And Philly’s a pretty good team with depth at pretty much every position and they’re not exactly wont to give up leads.

But the Caps had it figured out from the get-go: put your three best players, all three of which play different forward positions, on the same line and see what happens. What happens, of course, is that those three players combine for 4-5-9 and the Caps win 4-2. Nicklas Backstrom had the biggest night, scoring the tying goal and assisting on all three others. Alex Ovechkin ran his goal total to 11 in as many games with his brace tonight. Alex Semin went 1-2-3, and his goal was an absolute snipe.

So it stands to reason, then, that Bruce Boudreau would say this after the game, per Wyshynski’s Twitter: “Who knows where [they]‘ll be on Thursday.” YEAH BRUCE JEEZ WHO KNOWS?

    Good night: Haters gonna hate

    October 27th, 2009

    The Lead

Lock up your daughters, National Hockey League, because the real Toronto Maple Leafs are finally here and ready to get them all pregnant.

The Leafs, losers of something like 1,782 in a row (only one went down as an overtime loss), skulked their way into the Honda Center to play the Ducks and everyone on the planet was all like, “Oh the Ducks, jeez, they made the playoffs last year and Ryan Getzlaf and Scott Niedermayer oh no poor Leafs.” Like Brian Burke’s was gonna listen to that garbage. Please.

    A new WWL? You betcha

    October 26th, 2009

Just in case some of you were wondering just what your particular levels of outrage should be re: this weekend’s plethora of dirty hits (and I didn’t get into the slewfoot), this is what I hope will be a handy guide. Best of luck to you all!

Another new college hockey column at PD

    October 23rd, 2009

It’s about how Notre Dame (and to a lesser extent BU) are not good so far this year. Please enjoy!

Good night: The electric Kool-Aid acid test

    October 21st, 2009

    The Lead

Okay, seriously, I watched the third period of the Flames game and that was it. And while I did see Jarome Iginla wrist the absolute hell of a shot (one of my favorite things in the world, by the way), and also some crazy Freddy Sjostrom goal, then Mark Giordano fighting someone and finally the Flames winning a game and not looking like garbage doing it.

I think I’ve been dosed with hallucinogens or something and I need to go lie down.

Good night: Ain’t nothing changed for them except the year it is

    October 20th, 2009

    The Lead

John Tortorella must’ve been feelin’ strong. And why not?

The Rangers came into the game with one loss this season, that in their first game, and winners of seven in a row. So hey, the San Jose Sharks are coming to town, and while they did win the Presidents’ Trophy last year, they’re not exactly playing top-quality hockey.

So hey, let’s give one of the best goalies in the world the night off because this exciting new-look defense that hasn’t even allowed two goals a game can totally keep that up against a team with Devin Setoguchi, Danny Boyle, Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and some fellow called Dany Heatley, even with Steve Valiquette between the pipes.

Yes yes, more stuff at Puck Daddy

    October 19th, 2009

Here is this week’s WWL. Don’t hurt yourself clamoring to read it, there’s plenty of internet for everyone!

First college hockey column at Puck Daddy

    October 17th, 2009

You can go here and read it.

I will say that, as of now, the format is still a work in progress. We’ll see how things go. And no, I won’t talk about UMass Lowell every week, or, probably very much at all unless they do something like win the league or the Lamoriello Cup.

Good night: A save that was worth exactly one point

    October 15th, 2009

    The Lead

Poor, poor Cam Ward. He makes THAT stop and in doing so not only keeps his team within one, but also basically sparks the Hurricanes to a comeback in a game in which they were being pretty well handled by the defending Stanley Cup champs. And his boys can’t even pull out a W for him?

The Canes may have forced OT, but the Pens won in a shootout because Carolina got one goal from its SIX shooters. Too bad, really. That’s probably going to stand up as save of the year.
