No disrespect meant to Gonchar whatsoever. he's a defenseman from the dead puck era and as such, his point totals being similar to Graves' doesn't exactly make a strong case for jersey retirement of any type

gonchar has established himself as one of the best defensemen of his generation. trying to insinuate that he is garbage shows a CLEAR lack of hockey insight on your part.

No matter what, I think it's garbage how Graves' number is retired by the Rangers, yet Theo Fleury's number has yet to be retired league-wide, let alone by the Flames.

Grave's number being retired is an odd thing. Yes, he didn't post great numbers, but he was an insanely successful roleplayer for the team. He also did hold the record for most goals in a season for a Ranger until Jagr broke it a few years back...but the biggest thing is that he's a saint in NYC. The man has done insane amounts of charity work. His number being retired is more a tribute to the character of the man and the years he put in, rather than pure stats. Hell, Minnesota retired a jersey for their fans. Seriously. Graves has at least 20 more goals than they do...

Although I agree with the character assassination of Melrose, AND agree that Tampa hiring him was idiotic, due to his long absence from coaching, AND agree he is an egotist.

"really really really bad hockey coach" forgets that Melrose in his first year of coaching WHL won a Memorial Cup, he followed that up with an AHL Calder Cup title in 92. Even with the strike, getting through the playoffs and into the Stanley Cup final in 93 is worth something.

Thereafter Melrose faltered establishing himself as a bad NHL coach, but he still has a 281-275-35 just over .500 win record and two league titles as a coach...Bad hire decision YES, bad coach in Tampa YES, but he has past accomplishments that should at least knock two or three "reallys" off of bad coach.

Graves was much more to that team than the stat sheet. To suggest he wasn't is purely idiotic. I'm not a Rangers fan at all, but Graves was the nuts.

This list was almost good, but suggesting that Adam Graves' number being retired is an embarrassment makes you guys a joke.
